Waimea Valley

Waimea is Hawaiian for red water and the valley is named Waimea because the heavy iron content of the soil results in red soil and brownish red water in the waterfall and river that flows to Waimea bay.   The valley has been sacred to Hawaiians and populated since at least 1190 AD.  The park that encompasses the valley now includes botanical garden, an ancient Hawaiian settlement from 1490 AD, and the waterfall.   Multiple pictures of each of these attractions can be seen by clicking the photos below.
