O’ahu - The Gathering Place

O'ahu

O’ahu, also known as The Gathering Place, is the most populated of the Hawaiian islands, with 75% of the population (953,207).  Around ⅓ of the island’s population lives in the State Capital of Honolulu.  It also has several military installations, with Pearl Harbor being the most famous and the state’s top tourist attraction.

The island is only 44 miles East to West and 30 miles North to South, with an area of 597 square miles.  Yet despite its small size and dense population, much of the island remains a tropical paradise and there are many places that seem very remote. Though the islands of Hawai’i, Maui, and Kuau’i have a reputation of being even more beautiful, O’ahu still posses some of the most spectacular scenery to be found in the United States.  This natural scenery was the focus of most of our trip.
